1. Introduction to emotion and facial expressions

Objective:
At the end of the lesson students will be able to identify and match facial parts that express different emotions.
Anticipatory set:
The teacher will walk in the classroom with an exaggerated expression of happiness or excitement. Initially the teacher will not say anything to the students. After a minute or two ask the students: “What do you think I was trying to say to everyone?” Teacher is waiting for response from the students who should respond: “You were trying to say that you are happy.” The teacher will ask: “How do you know that I was happy?”
The teacher will get the student’s attention to focus on his face: eyebrows, mouth, eyes, etc. and tell them that our face can tell someone else how we feel inside. These are called facial expressions. What we feel inside are called emotions.
Procedures: The students will get a comic book in order to select pictures of different characters expressing different emotions.
UDL (multiple means of presentations): Students will also watch videos and other pictures on computer.
Initial instruction: Explain that when looking to see how someone else feels you have to focus on: eyes, eyebrows, mouth and chin.

Guided practice:
The teacher will play a short video (Mind Reading video – happy situation) and pause it when the character starts smiling. Then the teacher will demonstrate how you can use mouth, eyes and eyebrows to show others that you are happy.
